What Motivates You?

In my previous blog, I asked about “Do you have a job or a career?”. Over these nine years, I shared with many people who asked me on why I joined this industry and I also talked to many candidates who showed interest in making their career switch towards this industry.

I will like to use this simple chart below to illustrate my thoughts.

what motivates you

There are 3 areas of thoughts:

  1. What You Love
  2. What You Are Good At
  3. What Pays Well

From these 3 thoughts, they can be inter-linked as I encountered based on the people I met over the years.

  • There are people who really love what they do and they are good at it, but it does not pay well.
  • Another group of people I met are those who are paid well and good at what they do. But after being in the same job or position for a while, they feel bored.
  • Finally, there will be a group of people who feel that finding a job they love and pay well is a dream.

In my own journey as a corporate account manager, I was in a job that I loved to do and I was good at what I needed to do. You can say that I was happy but after a while, I realised that I wasn’t earning enough. And I started to seek better opportunities. When I was given an opportunity to come into this industry with a promising business plan, I knew that I could be well rewarded when comes to my income. Soon after understanding the business, learning from my mentor and seniors and handling of some claims in my first year, I started to be good at what I was doing and the conviction plus passion starts to follow suit. I can confidently say that I achieved the Win, Win, Win outcome a few years ago.

If you are one of the 3 groups of people I mentioned above, maybe it’s time that you give yourself a chance to rethink and focus on achieving the Win, Win, Win outcome just like myself.

I leave you with a quote I like the most.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs
